If you are pregnant, it is important to get tested for syphilis, as it is possible to pass the infection to your unborn baby. Untreated syphilis can lead to a low-birth-weight baby and increases the chance of delivering your baby too early, or stillborn. To protect your baby, ensure to have a syphilis test at least once during pregnancy and receive treatment right away. Infected newborns might not show any signs or symptoms of the disease at birth, but can develop serious problems within a few weeks. Complications include cataracts, deafness, seizures, and even death.
