How is syphilis diagnosed?

Treponemal tests are used to detect specific antibodies for syphilis, such as TP-PA, various EIAs, chemiluminescence immunoassays, immunoblots, and rapid treponemal assays. Treponemal antibodies tend to appear earlier than nontreponemal antibodies, making these tests particularly useful. Additionally, your doctor will give you a physical exam, thoroughly checking your genitals and looking for any skin rashes or sores known as chancres.
